Volunteering with The Arts Society provides opportunities to learn new skills, meet people with similar interests and support the arts within the local community. https://theartssociety.org/volunteering

One such area of volunteering which The Arts Society Hungerford focuses on is Young Arts. We have chosen to fund one-off Young Arts projects in the Hungerford area, particularly for young people who might not otherwise have access to the arts.

The Arts Society Hungerford has supported a number of projects this year across a variety of different arts related activities.  As in previous years we applied for a Community Grant (offered by the Arts Society’s Head Office) in order to continue our support of The Hungerford Childrens’ Arts Festival.  Along with a top up from TASH, an amount was donated via The Good Exchange which enabled the total donation to be doubled, courtesy of The Greenham Trust.  We are a major sponsor of this Hungerford based initiative which provides a great opportunity for local children to immerse themselves in a day of creative activities ranging from music, painting and circus skills to story-telling and print making.  Our involvement means that entry is free of charge making the event truly inclusive.

As well as the Childrens’ Arts Festival, TASH has also donated money to two local primary school aged children related initiatives: Chilton Foliat Primary School and Aldbourne Children’s Book Group.  The former took their older children up to London early in the New Year to see a performance of The Nutcracker at The Royal Opera House.  The latter arranged for a well known children’s pop up illustrator, Robert Crowther,  to run a workshop for pupils at St Michaels School, Aldbourne.  Both these events were greatly enjoyed by the children and we hope have really have widened their horizons.  Lastly, towards the end of the school year, money was donated to The John of Gaunt’s art department so that 15 light boxes could be purchased for use both in art and design/technology classes.  Our help means that rather than one box between the entire class, students now benefit from one between two of them.  As ever, the school is most grateful for our support and we will look forward to seeing some of the work produced as a result.

Over the last couple of years, the Arts Society Hungerford has supported a number of local initiatives in order to encourage young people to participate in the Arts.  Covid and the lockdown was obviously a difficult time for the arts in general and with schools closed, TASH provided the funding for schools in Hungerford to purchase art equipment and materials for youngsters studying art from home.

Since then, and once life resumed a bit more normally, TASH has continued to forge links locally and has provided funding for a number of events including the Hungerford Summer Festival and The Childrens’ Arts Festival organised by Arts for Hungerford.  We have also donated money towards some wonderful art display boards for the John of Gaunt Secondary School and have a number of different projects in hand for this year plus, once again, support for the Childrens’ Festival.

Access to the Arts for young people is such an important thing.  With the current cost of living crisis and the competing demands of an overcrowded school curriculum, the arts can be seen as an unnecessary luxury.  We therefore aim to provide what support we can in order to encourage children from diverse backgrounds to enjoy activities which enrich their lives now and going forward.

Our support for youth art events in 2020 and 2021 was affected by Coronavirus. We aimed to support the area of greatest need for young people, where possible within the arts space

In January 2021 we made a donation of £500 to Hungerford Primary School to help provide materials and activities as part of a summer art week to, hopefully, celebrate as a whole school some kind of return to normality. Head teacher David Mayer said that “This was very welcome news in a time that usually brings me anything but”.

Following last year’s cancellation, we were delighted to hear Hungerford Summer Festival is back for Summer 2021, with a streamlined but nevertheless stimulating, fun and varied programme of events www.hungerfordsummerfestival.com.  In support of this, in June we donated £500 to the general Festival fund, this sum being matched by The Good Exchange.

We made a donation of £1,000 to Arts for Hungerford which supported a masterclass in March for young musicians, led by the London Classical Trio.  However their 2020  programme was cancelled from April onwards.  The good news is that they plan to proceed with a programme in 2021 and so the balance of our 2020 donation will support two Classical Young Musicians concerts and the Children’s Arts Festival in the 2021 programme.

We had agreed to donate £500 to fund  Hungerford Summer Festival activities with John O’Gaunt School. As the 2020 Festival was  sadly cancelled , this £500 donation was instead made direct to the School PSA in May 2020 to fund 50 Art ‘goodie’ bags containing colouring pencils, a paint set with brush and palette, fine liners, art pencils, rubber and pencil sharpener altogether in a pencil case, for students without access to such materials. A same day response from a student said ‘I am so excited to receive the set – it will help me with my artwork’.

In November 2020 we made a further £500 donation to John O’Gaunt school.  This time, at their request and in partnership with the school PSA, we funded the purchase a video recorded for wider use in the school, recording the school prospectus, sharing information with Primary School children due to move up to the school and recording events and student projects.
